Pokémon Yellow Version: Special Pikachu Edition, (also known as Pokémon Yellow) was released in Japan in 1998 and in other regions in 1999 and 2000.
The Japanese version is especially significant because it is the original release of what the West later knew as Pokémon Yellow, and in Japan alone it sold around 1.549 million copies in 1998, making it one of that year’s biggest hits. Its feature of Pikachu following the player and reacting with visible emotions gave the game a level of personality that felt extraordinary on the original Game Boy.
The yellow version was marketed specifically with the Game Boy Pocket Printer, for which a Special Pikachu Edition was also released. In addition to the familiar gameplay, the game allows the picture book to be printed on the Pocket Printer. Pokemon Yellow was very well received by players and 14.64 million copies were sold.
